Fiserv Partners With Visa and Mastercard to Launch AI Agent Payment Tools

Payment processing giant Fiserv has announced new partnerships with Visa and Mastercard, marking a significant step toward the commercialization of agentic commerce—a fast-emerging model where artificial intelligence agents assist, and eventually act, on behalf of consumers in online transactions.

The collaborations aim to give merchants access to AI-driven payment tools while ensuring security, trust, and verification as autonomous shopping agents become more prevalent.

What the Fiserv–Visa Partnership Covers

Under the agreement with Visa, Fiserv will enable its merchant customers to access Visa’s agentic commerce and protocol tools, according to a company release. These tools are designed to support AI shopping agents as they search for products, compare prices, and interact with merchants’ checkout systems.

A key component of Visa’s offering is its agent authentication framework, which helps merchants distinguish legitimate AI agents from malicious bots. As automated agents increasingly interact with e-commerce platforms, the ability to verify intent and authenticity is becoming a critical safeguard.

Visa first unveiled its agentic commerce initiative earlier this year, opening its payment rails to developers building AI-powered shopping agents.

Mastercard Brings Agent Payment Verification

In a separate announcement, Fiserv confirmed it will also provide merchants access to Mastercard’s agent payments framework. This system focuses on registering and verifying AI agents before they are permitted to initiate transactions across Mastercard’s network.

By enforcing agent-level identity checks, the framework aims to reduce fraud risk while allowing merchants to participate in emerging AI-driven purchasing models with greater confidence.

Fiserv’s Strategy: Enabling Merchants for the Next Commerce Shift

Fiserv positioned the partnerships as part of a broader effort to prepare merchants of all sizes for a new era of AI-powered commerce.

“We are enabling merchants of all sizes to confidently participate in this new era of commerce, leveraging trusted standards and programmable payment,” said Sanjay Saraf, Fiserv’s global chief product officer of merchant solutions.

While Fiserv did not specify when merchant access to these tools will go live, the announcement underscores how payment infrastructure providers are moving quickly to adapt to AI-led consumer behavior.

What Is Agentic Commerce?

Agentic commerce refers to shopping workflows powered by AI agents—software systems that can search, evaluate, and potentially purchase products on behalf of users.

Companies such as OpenAI and Perplexity have already introduced AI tools that assist with product discovery and price comparison. Today, most agents stop short of completing transactions, but the long-term vision is for AI to handle purchases autonomously, subject to user-defined rules and permissions.

This evolution raises new challenges around authentication, consent, and fraud prevention—areas where Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv are positioning themselves as gatekeepers.
