Australia’s Reserve Bank (RBA), in collaboration with the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre (DFCRC), has officially launched Project Acacia, a large-scale pilot initiative exploring tokenised asset settlement and wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) in financial markets.
A total of 24 innovative use cases have been selected, including 19 live transaction pilots involving real assets and payments, and 5 proof-of-concept trials. Participants include local fintech startups and major banks, across asset classes such as fixed income, carbon credits, trade receivables, and private markets.
Multi-Asset Settlement on DLT: The Next Phase of Infrastructure
The project will test various forms of settlement instruments:

Stablecoins

Bank-issued deposit tokens

Pilot wholesale CBDC

Existing exchange settlement accounts at the RBA
These assets will be tested on both public and permissioned distributed ledger technology (DLT) platforms, including Hedera, R3 Corda, Canvas Connect, Redbelly Network, and other EVM-compatible blockchains.
Regulatory Innovation to Enable Real-World Testing
To ensure safe and scalable experimentation, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) has granted regulatory relief to participating institutions.
ASIC Commissioner Kate O’Rourke commented:
