Debit Card Dispute Process Explained: How to Report Fraud or Errors

According to FTC data, consumers submitted approximately 2.6 million fraud reports in 2024, with total losses exceeding $12.5 billion—a 25% increase over 2023. Among those reports, losses from bank transfers and payment methods, including debit cards, reached $2.09 billion. In addition, approximately 83,000 complaints involved debit card use in fraud cases—indicating that issuers are ramping up dispute and protection mechanisms to safeguard users.
However, disputing a debit card charge isn't always simple. Compared to credit cards, debit card disputes are often more restrictive and time-consuming. Understanding your rights and the correct steps to take is key to protecting your finances.
In this article, we'll walk you through the full debit card dispute process, including:
  • When you can dispute a charge
  • How to report unauthorized or incorrect transactions
  • How long you have to file a dispute
  • Why debit card disputes can be difficult
We'll also explain how virtual cards can help reduce your exposure to such risks and simplify future dispute scenarios.
When Can You Dispute a Debit Card Charge?
Debit card disputes are governed by the Electronic Funds Transfer Act (EFTA), which protects consumers from unauthorized transactions and errors. Valid reasons to dispute a charge include:
  • You didn’t authorize the transaction.
  • The transaction amount was incorrect.
  • A transaction doesn’t appear on your statement.
  • The bank made a processing error.
  • You received the wrong amount of cash from an ATM.
Can You Dispute a Charge You Approved?
In general, transactions you approved can’t be disputed under EFTA. This includes dissatisfaction with services or products—though these are typically protected when using credit cards.
However, some banks and card networks offer additional protections under zero-liability policies. Be sure to check with your issuer.
How To Dispute Fraudulent Charges on a Debit Card
  1. Contact the Merchant Start by reaching out to the merchant. Merchants prefer resolving issues directly to avoid non-refundable chargeback fees. Make sure to document the interaction (names, dates, emails, etc.).
  2. File a Dispute With Your Bank If the issue isn’t resolved, file a dispute with your bank. You may do this by phone, online, or via email. Some banks require a written letter within 10 business days.
Your dispute letter should include:
  • Name and account information
  • Merchant name
  • Transaction date and amount
  • Reason for dispute
  • Supporting documents (receipts, email records, etc.)
  1. Investigation & Provisional Credit Your bank typically has 10 business days (or 20 for new accounts) to investigate. If more time is needed, they must issue a provisional credit while they complete the review (up to 45 days total).

How Long Do You Have To File a Dispute?

  • If your card is lost or stolen, notify your bank within 2 business days to limit liability to $50.
  • If not reported within 2 days but within 60 days of the statement, liability may go up to $500.
  • Reporting after 60 days can make you liable for all charges after that period.

Why Debit Card Disputes Can Be Challenging

Debit card disputes are more complex than credit card ones because:
  • They’re directly linked to your bank account, impacting your available funds.
  • Consumer protection is more limited under EFTA than under the Fair Credit Billing Act.
  • Resolution may take weeks or months—and outcomes aren’t always in your favor.
