$4B Bitfinex Bitcoin Hacker Ilya Lichtenstein Freed Early, Credits Trump’s Prison Reform Law

Ilya Lichtenstein, the hacker behind the 2016 Bitfinex breach that resulted in the theft of nearly 120,000 Bitcoin, has confirmed that he has been released from prison earlier than expected. The former inmate attributed his early release to the First Step Act, a bipartisan prison reform law signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The announcement was made late Thursday via Lichtenstein’s verified account on X, where he thanked the legislation for allowing his early exit and said he intends to pursue positive work in cybersecurity moving forward.

Early Release After 2024 Sentencing

Lichtenstein, a dual Russian-U.S. national, was sentenced in November 2024 to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. He admitted to orchestrating the Bitfinex hack, one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history, with the stolen Bitcoin now valued at over $4 billion.

However, despite the original sentence, Lichtenstein said he has now been released from custody ahead of schedule.

“Thanks to President Trump’s First Step Act, I have been released from prison early,” Lichtenstein wrote. “I remain committed to making a positive impact in cybersecurity as soon as I can.”

Home Confinement Under Federal Guidelines

According to a report from CNBC, a Trump administration official confirmed that Lichtenstein has served a substantial portion of his sentence and is now under home confinement, in line with federal sentencing rules and Bureau of Prisons guidelines.

The First Step Act allows inmates who meet specific criteria to earn time credits toward early release or alternative custody arrangements, including supervised home confinement.

Lichtenstein also received credit for time already served following his arrest in 2022, more than five years after the original Bitfinex breach.

Wife Heather Morgan Reacts

Heather Morgan, Lichtenstein’s wife and co-defendant in the case, publicly celebrated the news. Morgan pleaded guilty to helping launder the stolen Bitcoin and shared her husband’s post on X just minutes later.

“The best New Year’s present I could get was finally having my husband home after four years of being apart,” Morgan wrote, alongside a photo of the couple smiling together.

Morgan herself remains subject to sentencing and supervision conditions related to the laundering conspiracy.

One of Crypto’s Most Infamous Cases

The Bitfinex hack has long been considered a landmark case in cryptocurrency crime. The breach exposed vulnerabilities in early exchange security and led to years of blockchain analysis by law enforcement, ultimately resulting in one of the largest asset seizures in U.S. Department of Justice history.

In addition to the prison sentence, Lichtenstein was convicted of conspiracy to commit money laundering and is expected to serve three years of supervised release following the completion of his custodial term.

Broader Implications

Lichtenstein’s early release has reignited debate around prison reform, sentencing standards for financial crimes, and how legacy legislation like the First Step Act continues to affect high-profile cases years after its passage.

For the crypto industry, the case remains a stark reminder of both the risks associated with early exchange infrastructure and the growing ability of regulators to track and recover digital assets—even years after a crime has occurred.
